Sen. Jeff Merkley to Visit Eugene Electric Vehicle Company

By Sonia Talati

EUGENE, Ore. -- Senator Jeff Merkley was in Eugene Thursday to discuss the electric vehicle bill and met up with the creators of this two-person, battery-operated vehicle from Arcimoto.

The car's battery can take unused energy from over the night or when the car is at rest and save it for later.

A bill going through the legislature pushes for more electric vehicles and includes support for lithium battery research.

The democrat believes the progress of electric vehicles would help to reduce America's oil dependence.

"If you have kind of followed the sequential development of these vehicles, they are now at the point where they would like to do limited vehicle production.? In other words, the first stage of actually being on the market," Merkley said.

Senate Bill 948 was filed last week.

Merkley says it's important the bill receives bipartisan support.
