Oregon company unveils three-wheeled electric vehicle, code named 'Red 5'
Eugene, OR (PRWEB) May 04, 2011
Arcimoto unveiled its first product prototype, the SRK, on Saturday, April 23 in Eugene. The SRK is described as an, 'ultra efficient three-wheeled electric vehicle,' with multiple range and body enclosure options. Additional information can be found on the Company’s website at http://www.arcimoto.com, and those interested in purchasing an SRK may place a $100 pre-order deposit on the site to reserve one.
Code named 'Red 5', the SRK product prototype is the culmination of 3 1/2 years of experience designing, engineering, and building the Everyday Electric vehicle. As Arcimoto's first product prototype, the SRK is representative of the model the Company intends to produce for sale. Improvements over previous iterations include an ultra efficient drive system, race caliber suspension, a lighter yet stronger frame, and a newly designed lightweight and modifiable body shell. The SRK design is based upon Arcimoto’s unique ultra-efficient three-wheeled electric vehicle platform architecture.
"Arcimoto’s launch was a huge milestone and was likely the biggest event in Oregon’s electric vehicle history," said Drive Oregon Board of Directors President and Green Lite Motors CEO Tim Miller. "Oregon companies have delivered the full range from electric bicycles and motorcycles, up to streetcars, and now we’re seeing the arrival of a real Oregon-built vehicle for everyday drivers."
Arcimoto estimated that around 450 people showed up to view the unveiling. Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy kicked off the presentation by introducing Arcimoto President Mark Frohnmayer. Longtime Arcimoto supporters Nathan Fillion and Jon Huertas, stars of TV’s Castle, made the trip up from Hollywood and drove the SRK out to enthusiastic applause during Frohnmayer’s monologue. Huertas was credited with defining the name and identity of the vehicle, as when he first drove an Arcimoto prototype he exclaimed, “It feels like driving a shark!”
When Fillion took the stage his message was one of simple thanks: "Thank you so much for simply yet so radically revolutionizing the auto industry, an industry that has seen so little change in the last century."
During the presentation Frohnmayer outlined three different full enclosure options intended for various consumer needs: the lightweight fabric LT option, the fleet-focused Deliverator option, and the hard-shelled Pulse option for every day driving. The vehicle will also feature a configurable battery pack with range options of 40, 80 and eventually 160 estimated miles per charge.
"The SRK is lighter, faster, and stronger than our previous concepts while incorporating desirable elements from each of them," said Frohnmayer. "We have received tremendous support from representatives at all levels of government, as well as from friends in Hollywood. We couldn’t have reached this milestone without their support, the support of our early adopter customers and the community at large."
Arcimoto was founded in 2007 with the mission to catalyze the shift to a sustainable transportation system. Arcimoto's first product, the SRK is a three-wheeled all-electric vehicle featuring extreme efficiency, daily utility and a grin-inducing driving experience that won’t break the bank. The Company recently unveiled 'Red 5', its first product prototype and is now refining that design for pilot fleet introduction and production.
Drive Oregon is a coalition of companies and interest groups engaged in the electric vehicle industry and transportation electrification. Last week, BMW upset electric vehicle lovers everywhere when Jim O'Donnell, the company's North American chairman and CEO, said that EVs won't work at their current battery range for at least 90% of the population--and that the U.S. government should end the $7,500 EV tax credit. Does this mean these cars aren't going to be in every driveway in five years?
Actually, people are pretty excited about electric cars--as is BMW, which is making them. So now the company is rushing to do damage control lest we think that it is not behind its own entry into the market. Fast Company had the chance to talk to Tom Kowaleski, VP of Corporate Communications for BMW North America, to find out what the company really thinks about EVs--and other alternative vehicle technologies.
So how about O'Donnell's comment that EVs may not work for 90% of the population? BMW seems to stand by it. Kowalski tells us, "In the next 15 years, internal combustion engines will still be between 85% to 95% of personal mobility around the world. Because we have such a diverse driving environment [in the U.S.], in some areas it could be higher, in some it could be lower." That is a pretty conservative view of what innovation we might make happen with electric cars in the next decade.
But BMW is still planning on rolling out EVs for that 5%, starting with a lease program for the ActiveE electric coupe next year. For now, the company believes it is catering to a niche market, mainly because EV tech does admittedly have some kinks to work out, including short battery range and lack of infrastructure.
And as for O'Donnell's comment about abolishing EV tax credits--credits that people might want to use to, say, buy a BMW EV? BMW is backtracking on that one. "Oftentimes in the early days, it does require a tactical use of the right incentives to stimulate the market. It was never our intention to say that we don't like incentives on EVs, rather that we think in particular incentives in America should not be used to stimulate one [technology] over the other," says Kowalski.
In other words, the government shouldn't play favorites, but BMW still appreciates having some sort of cash bump for its customers. And the company isn't ignoring the subsidies, either--it has at least two EVs in the pipeline and no current plans for a commercial hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.
