More electric vehicle charging stations coming to Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) -?Charging up those electric vehicles is getting even more convenient.

Electric-vehicle charging stations are being installed in the parking lots at eight Pima County libraries this summer. The project is among the county's efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels, provide better air quality and encourage clean technology.

The 16 stations - two to a library – are located in high-traffic areas, mostly in central Tucson and on the city's East Side. They'll be ready for use by electric car operators in early September.

Here is the list of locations getting electric charging stations:

The sites for the charging stations were chosen as part of ECOtality's Micro-Climate planning process, in collaboration with Pima County, Pima Association of Governments and the Tucson EV Project Advisory Team. ECOtality, Inc. is the San Francisco-based for-profit manager of EV Project.

Boulder Installing Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Boulder is installing public electric vehicle charging stations to help cut down on pollution. The two stations are being installed in the South Boulder Recreation Center parking lot. On Monday, the stations will be switched on and made available for drivers of plug-in cars to rent for $1 per hour. According to the Boulder Daily Camera, the city expects to have 40 charging stations installed across town by next year. Some of the planned station locations include the Boulder Public Library, the Pearl Street Mall, the Boulder County Courthouse, the Boulder Municipal Building and city-owned parking garages downtown. Half of the stations will service city-owned vehicles, while the other half will be available to the public to charge personal vehicles. Read more in the Boulder Daily Camera. Car charging plan unveiled

Driving into the parking lot at Devonshire Mall to charge up your electric car could soon become a reality under an Ontario government plan to spend $80 million to help build electric vehicle charging stations across the province.

"We want to make it convenient and realistic and possible for families to consider an electric car as a real and viable option," said Premier Dalton McGuinty as he outlined details of the plan in Markham on Tuesday. The province will provide seed money to proposals to install and test electric vehicle charging stations from the public and private sector.

According to McGuinty, an electric vehicle is a cost-effective alternative to gas-powered cars. "Investing in charging stations to help Ontarians choose electric and save money; $70 for gas fill-up; $7 for electricity," the premier tweeted following the announcement.

Ontario's plan to spur the prevalence of electric car charging stations would be a boost to the electric vehicle industry as well as the Windsor area's fledgling green sector, industry spokesmen said.

"We would love to get involved in providing solar powered car ports with charging stations in every main parking area," said Klaus Dohring, president of Green Sun Rising Inc. "In a few years, we'll have thousands of electric vehicles," said Dohring, whose Kildare Road company manufactures solar powered car ports housing charging stations. "When you consider how many parking lots we have, it will be much easier to charge the vehicle where the vehicle is parked during the day."

The latest incentive offered by the province would have a "significant impact" on an industry which currently employees about 1,200 in the region, added Dohring.

"Ten years ago in Germany, there was hardly any solar industry," he said. "Today, the solar industry in Germany employs about 200,000 people."

Renewable energy as an industry can become larger than the global automotive industry, he added. "It is clear that our transportation sector is moving toward electrification. It is smart to embrace clean transportation and develop the infrastructure for that."

Ontario already offers consumers incentives ranging from $5,000 to $8,000 to purchase electric cars.

Virtually every major automaker is in the process of launching plug-in electric or hybrid vehicles. Chrysler Group, for example, plans to introduce an electric Fiat 500 late next year.

"Electrification is just one technology that will help Chrysler Group contribute to meeting the new fuel economy standards as well as lower our carbon footprint," said LouAnn Gosselin, spokeswoman for Chrysler Canada. "Market acceptance of electric vehicles and bringing the cost of electrification to an acceptable level to the consumer will be key."

Lawrence Musyj, director of conservation and energy management at Enwin Utilities, said the announcement could prompt municipalities as well as retailers and other private employers to begin installing charging stations on their properties.

"This announcement is great as far as indicating to the public that electric vehicles are coming and that it's time to start considering getting infrastructure," said Musyj. He said it won't be long before electric vehicles, such as General Motors' Chevy Volt, will cross the border.

Boulder installs first public electric vehicle charging stations

Boulder is banking on a future in which drivers hit the roads in zero-emission electric vehicles.

On Wednesday, the city began catering to that vision with the installation of the first two public electric vehicle charging stations.

At a total cost of $31,000, the stations were installed at the South Boulder Recreation Center parking lot. On Monday, the stations will be switched on and made available for drivers of plug-in cars to rent for $1 per hour.

The stations will cost the city about 90 cents per hour to operate, but because the city can't legally re-sell electricity, it will instead charge a $1 "service fee" to rent a radio frequency card that operates one of the stations.

"(Recreation center users) can just come up to the service desk there and request a card," said Joe Castro, Boulder's facility and fleet manager.

Castro said the two stations have the ability to charge up to four vehicles at the same time, and include both 240-volt and 110-volt hookups.

By June 2012, Castro said he expects to have 40 charging stations installed throughout Boulder. Some of the planned station locations include the Boulder Public Library, the Pearl Street Mall, the Boulder County Courthouse, the Boulder Municipal Building and city-owned parking garages downtown.

Half of the stations will service city-owned vehicles, while the other half will be available to the public to charge personal vehicles.

Each station costs about $3,500 for the charger and about $12,000 for electrical hookups.

Boulder is paying for the equipment though a $500,000 federal grant that was secured with the help of U.S. Rep. Jared Polis. The Boulder Democrat is scheduled to appear at the South Boulder Recreation Center on Monday to christen the first charging stations.

It's still not clear how widely used the stations will be for the first few years, as the rollout of plug-in electric vehicles continues to be slow.

Nationwide, there are an estimated 3,000 electric vehicles on the roads. But Castro said he thinks the number of plug-ins in Boulder will begin to increase soon.

"The anticipation now is that in 2012, there will be 100 to 300 EV vehicles in the Boulder area," he said.

Boulder has been working with Ford to make its electric vehicles available at area dealerships.

To help entice customers to buy one of the forthcoming Ford Focus Electric vehicles, the automaker announced Wednesday that it would begin partnering with SunPower to offer consumers high-efficiency rooftop solar systems to offset all of the energy used to charge a Focus.

The companies will offer the systems at a cost of less than $10,000, after federal tax credits. Local rebates may bring the cost of the 2.5-kilowatt system even lower.

Mike Tinskey, Ford's manager of sustainability activities, said the program is sure to appeal to customers in Boulder -- which accounts for about 21 percent of all solar systems installed through Xcel Energy's Solar Rewards program.

"This is going to be a great product because EV customers have been asking us for a green solution," he said.

He said the Boulder market should begin to see more Ford electric vehicles available in showrooms by early 2012.

Seth Masia, deputy editor of Solar Today magazine, said he thinks that car dealers will eventually figure out that loans for cars and solar charging systems can be packaged together.

"I think you'll see mechanisms like that emerging," he said.

In addition to Ford's new lineup of electric models, Toyota plans to release the Toyota RAV4 EV in 2012. The RAV4 will run on a lithium-ion battery pack and is expected to run 100 miles on a single charge.

The 2012 Nissan LEAF has a range of 100 miles per charge and can go 90 mph on the freeway.

General Motors, meanwhile, has increased production on its 2012 Chevy Volt.

Powering up: Lujack's installs electric vehicle charging station

Lujack Chevy became the first area Chevrolet dealer and Quad-City dealership to install an Electric Vehicle, or EV, charging station — a move that is firing up local leaders interested in seeing the technology expand across the Quad-Cities.

Under the glare of media cameras Thursday, Darrin Plett, a journeyman electrician with Davenport Electric Contract Co., installed a Level 2 EV charger inside the service department of Lujack Chevy.

“This is what it would look like in your garage,” Gwen Tombergs, Lujack’s marketing director, said during a news conference at the Davenport dealership. “As you can see, it takes 10 minutes to install once electric is run.”

Tombergs said the station was installed in anticipation of the arrival of the new Chevy Volt, which is expected to be on Lujack’s lots in the next couple months. The dealer also will sell the Nissan Leaf, but she said its arrival “is farther down the line.”

“Of course, we’ll have to charge our own cars, but this is also for the public’s use,” she said of the new charging station. “If you’re in town and you need to charge your car, you could come up here and charge it.”

The SPX EL-50580 Voltec charging station supplies electric energy for electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid (electric-gas vehicles), semi-static and mobile electrical units. Tombergs said an average charge with a Level 2 EV charger takes about four hours. “(A charger) also comes with the car, but with those it takes about 10 hours to charge.”

The charging station was hailed by the Quad-City chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, or NECA, which partnered with Lujack’s to advance the charging infrastructure. “We are excited to help lay the groundwork and facilitate bringing this technology to the Quad-City area,” said Steve Chesley, the chapter’s executive manager. “We’re just trying to get the Quad-Cities to look to the future. So many cities just sit and wait and see what other cities are doing first.”

Chesley said the Chevy Volt is the first major EV car to be hitting the market, but all the major manufacturers are expected to launch their own models by the end of 2012.

With more electric cars being introduced, the high price of gasoline and government incentives available for EV car buyers, Chesley said “This is going to be a very viable market.”

Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba also hopes to see EV charging stations installed across downtown Davenport, although plans to do so have not been finalized. “We’re a green city and we’re going to build upon that,” he said.

Among the ideas he and other city officials have been discussing informally is to install charging stations to create a revenue stream to replace the income lost when the city removed its downtown parking meters earlier this year. With the new revenue, he said “we could use it to pay off some of the bonds on the parking ramps.”

Gluba said he also is looking into the possibility of installing wind turbines along the riverfront to generate electricity to power the charging stations. “That’s the idea, whether it’s going to happen I don’t know. But my prediction is by 2015 you’re going to see a lot of electric cars around town and they’re going to need to be charged somewhere.”

Molly Arp Newell, president of EnviroNet, a Davenport environmental consulting firm, said the firm has been hired by Delta Institute to identify locations in the Quad-Cities that could be used as EV charging demonstration sites. “We’d like it to be on a brownfield site,” she said, adding that EnviroNet is looking at areas near where the public now gathers for a two- to three-hour period. “Having locations to plug the vehicles in is the key.”

She said the research is creating the groundwork for obtaining future grant funding.

Meanwhile, Chesley said NECA has been working with its contractor members for more than a year so they are prepared to install the new technology. He said about five local contractors are certified to install the chargers and even more are in the approval process.

Plett, the electrician, said an average home will be able to accommodate the power needed for an in-house EV charging station. “It draws about half (the electricity) of a dryer or an average air conditioning unit.”

Employees at EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) in Ipswich, Massachusetts wondering whether to invest in an electric car have a new incentive. EBSCO has installed two Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at the company’s downtown headquarters—the very first commercial-grade charging stations in Ipswich.

If someone is on the fence about going electric, I hope that the prospect of being able to ‘top off’ the charge while at work will provide that extra impetus to making a more responsible buying decision.” Collins will be leading by example as he is in the process of buying an electric vehicle.

As a company that prides itself on its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint, EBSCO has undertaken a number of green projects. EBSCO has two large photovoltaic solar electric arrays that help defray the energy output in two of its four downtown Ipswich buildings and a solar array that powers a hot water heater designated for its employee dining facility. The company takes advantage of its location next to the Ipswich commuter rail station by reimbursing the commuting costs of employees who take the train to and from work, and EBSCO has been providing its field sales teams with hybrid vehicles since 2007. Electric-vehicle charging stations being built at 8 Tucson-area libraries

Electric vehicle charging stations will be ready for use next month at eight Pima County libraries, officials said today.

The charging stations are being installed this summer in parking lots, two per library. They’re being placed in high-traffic areas, mostly in the central part of Tucson and on the east side.

The stations are intended to be supplemental charging facilities, meant for recharging electric vehicles whose owners had previously charged them at their homes.

County officials say this project will help reduce the use of fossil fuels, provide better air quality and encourage clean technology.

Pima County is one of 16 metro areas around the country getting these charging stations under a federal grant. The project is financed by the U.S. Department of Energy stimulus grant of $114.8 million, from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The grants are matched by private investment, bringing the total value of the national project to approximately $230 million.

Electric Vehicle Charging Ecosystem Presents Opportunities

These business strategies are at different levels of complexity within the EV value chain and consequently, bring different risks and rewards to the participants, as analyzed in the report.

The current state

The charging infrastructure necessary to stimulate widespread adoption of EVs in the marketplace remains to be built. Governments, for example those in Germany, China and the United States, are increasingly making funds available for the development of charging infrastructure. The 36-month "EV Project" in the United Sates is one of the largest initiatives to date supporting vehicle electrification and charging infrastructure. A European Commission ?"Green eMotion" project, is working with 42 partners from industry, the energy sector, EV manufacturers, municipalities, universities and research institutions, to develop a commonly accepted framework consisting of interoperable and scalable technical solutions in connection with a sustainable business platform.

Risks remain

Although opportunities are evident, the report also identifies a number of risks. A key risk is that, while most companies advertise that they offer solutions for a wide range of customers – from utilities to car rentals, to hotels and home users – many lack a differentiated solution raising questions about the sustainability of competitive advantage and convincing revenue models.

It is also apparent that, while being a fast-mover is critical, this does not necessarily secure market share. For instance, manufacturing charging hardware will rapidly become a high-volume, low-margin business. In addition, several players have not considered the role vehicle manufacturers and energy utilities will play in this emerging ecosystem, and until these two central stakeholders decide where they want to sit, a stable value chain is unlikely to emerge.

Electric vehicle charging comes to Laguna Beach

LAGUNA BEACH – Electric car owners welcomed the opening of two charging stations in downtown, the first open to the public in the city.


City officials and drivers from around Orange County attended a ribbon cutting for the charging stations Tuesday afternoon. Managed by ChargePoint America, a program that connects charging stations with a wireless network, the city paid $21,500 with $15,000 coming from a U.S. Department of Energy grant.

"It meets with our value system in terms of the environment," Mayor Toni Iseman said. "It was the right thing to do, especially with the split."


Parking and charging at the two spaces in the lot at Forest Avenue and Laguna Canyon Road will be free until at least September, though time will be limited to four hours.


"Then we're going to take a look at the data and how we move forward," said Will Holoman, a senior water-quality analyst with the city who coordinated the project.


The stations are the first in Laguna Beach, and Holoman said depending on use, the city could add more.


"It's the beginning of a new era," he said.


Locals who drive electric likely will stick to their home charging stations, but Laguna Beach resident and Tesla owner Andrew Castellano said he's happy to see infrastructure growing.


"Someday I'd love to take the car to San Francisco or take a longer road trip. Having the charging stations would make a huge difference," he said.


Matt Walton of Moorpark in Venture County brought his electric Mini Cooper to Laguna Beach. Using ChargePoint's smartphone application, he could check the status of the charging stations before leaving home.


"I drove down here knowing I could come down and charge," he said.


For Steven Kettner of Irvine, the new charging station will make his family more likely to spend time in Laguna Beach.


"If I'm low on charge, I can still come down here and not have to worry about getting home," he said.


Charging stations have long been in Costa Mesa and Anaheim. Seal Beach took out its old charging stations in 2005 because of lack of use, but with more electric cars now on the road, officials there voted in January to reinstall two stations and add another. Linda Nicholes, a longtime member of advocacy group Plug In America, said south Orange County has historically not been as accessible to electric vehicle drivers.


"This part of the county just has been vacant when it comes to charging infrastructure," she said.


About 10 electric car owners brought out their vehicles Tuesday to try out the new Laguna Beach stations.


"It's really fantastic to see this and just to emphasize how much we need infrastructure," said Michael Jones of Coulomb Technologies, which manufactures charging stations for ChargePoint.


The company is working with $37 million from the Department of Energy to build 5,000 charging stations around the country.


"At the end of the day, this is about building an industry," he said. "It's local. It's sustainable."

AAA Presents Electric Vehicle Mobile Charging Unit to Electric Drive Transportation Association

98 percent of survey participants own their own home.63 percent live in single-family dwellings.99 percent of these homes have electrical systems equipped with circuit breakers, an important piece of infrastructure needed to support a 240V charge station.71 percent have space on their electrical service panel for additional breakers, allowing space to have a line for a charge station to be added.78 percent of respondents lack a 240V outlet or line near their parking location, which is essential for faster home charging.

Building foundations, garage types, and the location of electrical service panels create different charge station installation requirements. The survey indicates that 32 percent of participants have basements, 29 percent have crawl spaces and 36 percent slab foundations. Garage types also vary, with 47 percent of garages attached to the home, 7 percent detached, 13 percent carport or driveway, and 33 percent other types. The location of the main electrical service panel is also variable, with 32 percent in a basement, 29 percent in a garage, and 31 percent outside the home.


In addition to these findings, participants indicated that they usually want the charge station installed in a garage, but also want the flexibility of charging their vehicle in their driveway.
