Mitsubishi Motors and Energy Industry Leader NRG Energy Team Up to Improve Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in ...

Press Release Source: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. On Thursday April 21, 2011, 2:40 pm EDT

WASHINGTON, April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., (MMNA) and NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG - News), one of America's leading energy producers, are joining forces to provide owners of the upcoming Mitsubishi i new freedom and range confidence across NRG's eVgo(SM) (ee-vee-go) comprehensive, privately funded electric vehicle (EV) recharging network.

(Photo: ?http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110421/LA87452)

Set for an initial rollout in the coming months in two of America's most populated metropolitan areas - Houston and the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex - before expanding into additional major cities throughout Texas in 2012, Mitsubishi i owners in the Lone Star State will soon be able to quickly and conveniently recharge their breakthrough eco-friendly and efficient EVs at dozens of eVgo charging Freedom Stations.

Each Freedom Station provides a 480 volt DC fast charger that can add 30 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes and a 240 volt Level 2 charger that can add up to 25 miles of range in an hour. Freedom Stations are available 24/7 and include a customer service tower with a mounted camera, giving customers access to an eVgo service representative or to activate a strobe light, siren and alert law enforcement, even from inside their vehicles. The eVgo network will also include Convenience Stations(SM) that offer a 240 volt Level 2 charger and are available during the retail host's business hours.

The targeted market rollout for these new eVgo EV charging stations is to have 25 Freedom Stations in the Houston area and 35 Freedom Stations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area open by the end of this summer, with the number of available Freedom Stations increasing to 50 and 75 in the two metropolitan areas respectively by the end of 2012. NRG also plans to electrify the Interstate 45 corridor connecting them in 2012.

"Through this partnership, owners of Mitsubishi i electric vehicles will find tremendous convenience, economy and price security through their access to the eVgo network," said Arun Banskota, president of NRG EV Services. "We welcome Mitsubishi to the eVgo partnership and look forward to building an unprecedented and growing EV infrastructure together."

Another facet of the partnership will see Mitsubishi acting as a consultant to NRG in the energy company's efforts to advance electric vehicle infrastructure in America. The Japanese auto manufacturer has extensive knowledge in electric vehicles and EV infrastructure as it has been designing and developing 100% electric-powered cars for more than four decades and has sold thousands of Mitsubishi i production cars in Japan and Europe. ?

An additional part of the Mitsubishi Motors/NRG agreement will allow Mitsubishi i owners in Texas the option to subscribe to special EV Charging Package rates offered by NRG during the home assessment service and installation of an Eaton Level II home charger.

"We are very excited to be working with such a dynamic and forward-thinking energy company as NRG to expand the electric vehicle recharging infrastructure in the great state of Texas," said Yoichi Yokozawa, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America. "Savvy consumers and corporate/municipality fleet managers who take advantage of our special pre-order offer for the eco-friendly and money-saving electric-powered Mitsubishi i beginning Earth Day, April 22, 2011, will have scores of convenient, fast and affordable eVgo recharging stations to choose from when they take delivery of their cars next year."

Frost & Sullivan to Provide Industry Leaders With Key Plug-In Electric Vehicle Market Insights

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - March 17, 2011) - ?Frost & Sullivan's Veerender Kaul is set to speak at this year's Plug-In Electric Vehicle Infrastructure USA 2011 Conference & Exhibition March 31-April 1. Kaul aims to explore the consumer attitude and perceptions about electric vehicles and their electric vehicle purchase interest and preferences.

By 2020, huge shifts in urbanization and society are expected, which will collectively impact personal mobility.?Electric vehicles (EV) are expected to be in the forefront of these changes with ground-breaking products, innovative business models and new customer experiences. The move from a fossil-fuel based personal transportation system to an electric system, however, presents enormous challenges. The high price of EVs, limited driving range of battery EVs (typically 100 miles) and the lack of a public charging network are major impediments to the adoption of EVs.

The high investment needs for developing electric vehicles and the supporting infrastructure, amidst uncertainty about the acceptance of these vehicles, poses enormous risk. For a successful EV program, it is important to understand the vehicle-purchase and vehicle-usage criteria of consumers and fleet customers and align product and service offerings to them. Veerender Kaul's presentation will analyze the following key issues:

What is the level of awareness and interest in purchasing electric vehicles? What are the motivations for purchasing an electric vehicle? What are the vehicle usage and performance characteristics of interested customers? Who are the potential early adopters of electric vehicles? What are the electric vehicle feature preferences?

"On one hand, the unique driving attributed to an EV makes it difficult to position it as a primary vehicle and on the other hand its high price makes its positioning as a secondary vehicle difficult.?Innovative business models that package transportation services with EVs to overcome its driving limitations and derive secondary revenue streams to reduce the cost burden on EV owners are crucial to positioning an EV as a primary vehicle and enhancing its value proposition," notes Veerender Kaul, Frost & Sullivan's Automotive & Transportation Research Director.

The Plug-In Electric Vehicle Infrastructure USA 2011 conference in San Diego, CA on March 31-April 1 will showcase 20+ senior level speakers across 15+ dedicated business focused sessions to discuss the most innovative & commercial charging solutions, consumer behavior data, utility case studies, connectivity & payment strategies and much more in order to work out the a win-win situation for stakeholders. Hybrid Electric Vehicles Are the Future of the Auto Industry

With the rise in the price of gasoline, more and more people are taking interest in electric vehicles as means of transport. Another major advantage of electrically operated vehicles is that these vehicles offer pollution free means of transportation. Therefore even if 70% of people start using an electrically powered vehicle, we will be free of global warming caused by emission of gases like CO and CO2. There will be almost no instances of cancer caused by pollution.

Electric vehicles are more energy efficient than the contemporary vehicles wherein the electric vehicles operates at approximately 47 percent of effectiveness, while a contemporary vehicle operates at about 19 percent only.

But the electric car which can truly replace a traditional car is still in the conceptual stage as the electric vehicle would need continuous electric power from the batteries. The major disadvantages of present day electric cars are the time period required for recharging the batteries and their limited range

Now, it has almost been a century since the electric car has been popularly discussed, but recent developments in the hybrid electric vehicles technology and the growing concerns for the environment has revived the drive for an hybrid electric vehicles and this has become a realization today

Due to this problem of recharging batteries, a new type of design conceptualized in the minds of researchers and they came out with a solution. The researchers have put forward a new electrical vehicle fitted with on board electric power storage system and means of generating power. The generated power would be stored in the storage system and would be used to drive the vehicle. This new type of vehicle is called hybrid electric vehicle or HEV.

The present day storage system in hybrid electric vehicle comprises of stack of lead acid batteries as these can be charged in parallel with the load. The generating system consists of electric generator powered by internal combustion engine.

Researchers are optimistic about the performance of the hybrid vehicles. They are sure that the hybrid electric vehicle or HEV will be far more fuel efficient than the traditional vehicle powered by internal combustion engine.
