Piscataway business lands electric vehicle charging station

PISCATAWAY — Leviton, a leading global manufacturer of electrical devices, unveiled one of the first commercial electric vehicle charging stations in Central Jersey at the IEEE Operations Center in Piscataway during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday.

The Leviton Evr-GreenLevel 2 Commercial Charging Station, donated by Graybar, provides IEEE employees who own electric vehicles a convenient location to recharge for free while at work. IEEE is the world?s largest technical professional association advancing technology for humanity, with 400,000 members worldwide.

SANTA ROSA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Electric vehicle pioneer ZAP Jonway (OTC BB:ZAAP.ob - News) appointed Tony (Tianxin) Nie as Vice President of Strategic Business Development overseeing strategic partnerships and key client relationships in China and Asia, as well as General Manager of ZAP Hangzhou Joint Venture, which will be the electric vehicle technical center for ZAP Jonway in China.

Mr. Nie was formerly Director of Sales & Marketing of Lotus in China as well as Lotus Engineering’s leader and founding member for China. He has been with Lotus since 2005, overseeing business development, sales, engineering developments, marketing and public relations in China. The Next Big Business Opportunity: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

Looking for a way to angle into the burgeoning electric vehicle business? Forget cars--investing in the charging infrastructure is the way to go. A new report from GTM Research claims that global EV sales will grow fivefold to 3.8 million by 2016 (there were 246 million total cars on the road just in the U.S as of 2009). All those cars will need convenient places to charge up.

There are, of course, plenty of major companies already working hard to build charging stations. Our slideshow from last year showed off some of the more promising charge station prototypes in the pipeline, including GE's WattStation charger (pictured above), ECOtality's Blink Charger, and the Coulomb Chargepoint charger. All of these chargers have begun rolling out or will be released later this year. Coulomb will have 2,600 public stations in the U.S. by October 2011, and ECOtality plans to deploy almost 15,000 charging stations in 16 U.S. cities in the near future. But that's not even close to enough for 3.8 million cars.

There are ways to get in on the EV infrastructure boom without building chargers. Instead, entrepreneurs might want to focus on the smart grid side of things. After all, the grid needs to be able to handle the rapid growth in EVs--and right now it can't. That means utilities need to invest in all sorts of smart devices for the grid, including upgraded voltage regulators, capacitor banks (groups of high-voltage capacitors that control the level of voltage supplied and absorb energy from power line spikes), and communication networks.

Again, there are companies--such as Trilliant and Silver Spring--working on these problems. But as the number of EVs climbs to ten or even hundreds of millions in the coming decades, the charging infrastructure business will explode. Don't say we didn't warn you.

'Angkor' electric vehicle to hit road | Business | The Phnom Penh Post - Cambodia's Newspaper of Record

DOMESTICALLY-produced electric cars may be brought to market early next year thanks to a new factory.

Cambodia’s Heng Development Co has signed an agreement with Hong Kong-based Chau Leong to build an eco-friendly vehicle called the “Angkor.”

The vehicle was developed by local inventor Nhean Phaloek – who once reportedly claimed that the doors to one of his prototype vehicles opened telepathically.

Nhean Phaloek said that construction on the plant started? on March 14 on 20 hectares in the Kandal Stoeng district of Kandal province.

Sien Chanheng, director general for Heng Development, said plant will aim to make between 500 and 1,000 cars a year, with the first appearing soon after the beginning of next year.

She also said the US$20 million deal will be split 80 percent/20 percent between her company and Nhean Phaloek, and Chau Leong, respectively. Nhean Phaloek will import machines and spare parts from China, as well as other technology from Germany, to make the Angkor.

He said the goal is to start with two- and four-chair cars sold for $5,000 and then move on to six- and 12-chaired vehicles.

He also expects high demand from visitors to the Kingdom.

“My guess is that 20 cars can be sold in one day because foreign tourists are already booked to buy,” he said.

Nhean Phaloek plans to expand to overseas markets as well, he said.

Ith Praing, secretary of state at the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Energy, who attended the signing ceremony yesterday morning at NagaWorld Phnom Penh, praised the car for its small carbon footprint.

In response to the growing electric vehicle market, Federal stimulus grant funds are available to local business owners to install public customer charging stations. The Puget Sound area is one of a handful of regions that can take advantage of this opportunity. Businesses have until September 2011 to pursue the available grant funds to help the Puget Sound area plug-in to a new era of transportation innovation and reduce the fossil fuel costs and emissions. The benefits to becoming a charging station host include free charging stations; up to $2,500 for installation (through EV Project only); free maintenance coverage through December 2012; ownership of charging station transfers to site host at the end of the project; and recoup electricity costs, or even generate revenue by passing on charging fees to your EV customers. Requirements of charging station hosts include allow rapid installation of the charger; allow the general public to use the charger; provide adequate public signage; keep the charger in good operating order; cannot sell or move the charger once it is installed; and allow anonymous data to be provided for analysis.
