Coulomb Technologies Announces Largest Electric Vehicle Workplace Charging Installation at Google, Inc.

CAMPBELL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Coulomb Technologies today announced that Google, Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG - News) has deployed more than 70 electric vehicle charging stations managed by the ChargePointR Network at its worldwide headquarters in Mountain View, CA. The charging stations are used by employee-owned electric vehicles, as well as the company’s growing car sharing program for Googlers (GFleet), which includes Chevrolet Volts and Nissan LEAFs. With plans for 250 more charging stations on its campus, and a goal to make 5 percent of its campus parking EV-ready, Google’s installation is the largest workplace charging installation for electric vehicles in the country. Google has created a video on their Green Blog detailing their green transportation initiatives.

“By investing in new, green transportation technologies, Google is making a significant contribution to reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions,” said Rolf Schreiber technical program manager, Electric Transportation, at Google. “Our EVs and charging stations are part of our broader green transportation system that includes biodiesel shuttles that Googlers use to commute to work instead of driving their own cars. But we’re only one company among many, so we hope our green transportation initiatives serve as a model for other companies to incorporate sustainability programs into their own workplaces.”

Google manages its charging stations via the ChargePoint Network, the world’s largest network of charging stations and EV charging applications. The following workplace charging features are available through Coulomb’s ChargePoint Network:

Controlled access: Via an online portal and smartcards, customers can control who accesses their charging stations (employees or guests), to control costs, eliminate electricity theft, and optimize station use. Measuring performance of green initiatives: Online station management provides tracking and reporting of energy usage, greenhouse gas and gasoline savings data. Reports are displayed by graphs that can be filtered by day, week, month, station attributes and energy usage/GHG range. Customers can also export their station data and combine the data with other system for further corporate sustainability analysis. Network Operations: The ChargePoint Network provides 24/7 station network monitoring to ensure network services are always available, Over the Air (OTA) station software upgrades to accommodate future advancements without onsite service, and the ability to tie into energy, building and other business management systems. Driver Services: Customers have access to the ChargePoint Network’s 24/7 driver telephone assistance, e-mail or text message driver notification alerts for charging session interruption or charging completed, and individual driver portals to customize notifications, track their energy usage and greenhouse gas savings, view charging history, and have access to the largest network of public charging stations in the world at www.mychargepoint.net. Cost-saving utility programs and incentives: Charging stations contain utility-grade meters and the ability to communicate with other smart grid systems, enabling demand response, time-of-use pricing, and other smart grid programs provided by local utilities.

SPX Home Charging Installation Survey Findings Shed Light on Households of Electric Vehicle Customers

NOVI, Mich., June 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The homes of most electric-vehicle buyers have the electrical foundation to support advanced charging, but they often require a custom solution installed by an expert to take advantage of this option, according to data collected by SPX Service Solutions.


SPX Service Solutions, a leader in global automotive diagnostics, has gathered data about potential owners of electric vehicles and their garages since November 2010, when it became the exclusive provider of turnkey home-charging installation services to owners of the new Chevrolet Volt.


SPX Service Solutions works with electric vehicle owners and interested buyers to prepare their garages for 240-volt charge stations, which can charge the vehicles in half the time required with a 120-volt charge station. To date, the company has surveyed about 2,000 potential owners in five U.S. markets where electric vehicles are currently rolling out: California, Michigan, Texas, and the New York and Washington, D.C. metro areas.


"After seven months of working with people acquiring electric vehicles, SPX has collected an extensive amount of valuable data on their needs," said Tanvir Arfi, President of SPX Service Solutions. "One key finding is that, for the most part, their homes are conducive to home-charging. Most respondents own their own homes, live in single-family dwellings, and have electrical systems that can support 240V charging. In addition, the types of garages and foundations in their homes vary considerably, indicating the need for highly flexible, custom charge station installations."


Arfi is presenting findings from SPX's electric vehicle home-charging survey during the Automotive News Green Car Conference taking place today in Novi, Mich. Some key findings from the survey include

98 percent of survey participants own their own home.63 percent live in single-family dwellings.99 percent of these homes have electrical systems equipped with circuit breakers, an important piece of infrastructure needed to support a 240V charge station.71 percent have space on their electrical service panel for additional breakers, allowing space to have a line for a charge station to be added.78 percent of respondents lack a 240V outlet or line near their parking location, which is essential for faster home charging.

Building foundations, garage types, and the location of electrical service panels create different charge station installation requirements. The survey indicates that 32 percent of participants have basements, 29 percent have crawl spaces and 36 percent slab foundations. Garage types also vary, with 47 percent of garages attached to the home, 7 percent detached, 13 percent carport or driveway, and 33 percent other types. The location of the main electrical service panel is also variable, with 32 percent in a basement, 29 percent in a garage, and 31 percent outside the home.


In addition to these findings, participants indicated that they usually want the charge station installed in a garage, but also want the flexibility of charging their vehicle in their driveway.


SPX conducts the detailed online survey to better prepare its network of 2,000 certified electricians for the specific type of electric vehicle home-charging installation required, and to simplify the process for EV owners and prospective buyers. Electrical Alliance to Offer Electric Vehicle Charging Station Installation Training

Its Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee will be the first to train Washington, DC area electricians on the new technology.

The Washington, DC Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC) will be the first in the area to offer Electric Vehicle Charging Stations installation training for electricians.

The Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee, sponsored by the Electrical Alliance, is a cooperative effort between the Washington, DC Chapter of National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, (IBEW) Local 26. The JATC offers accredited apprenticeship programs that prepare students to excel in the electrical industry and continuing education that readies experienced electricians for work on tomorrow’s systems.

Ralph Neidert, a master electrician in Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia and assistant director at the JATC participated in the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP) to become certified to train-the-trainers who will teach local electricians to install, commission and maintain Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE).

The EVITP’s program addresses technical requirements, safety imperatives and performance integrity of industry stakeholders. At the national level, NECA is one of those stakeholders. Rob Colgan, NECA executive director, market development emphasized that charging equipment for electric vehicles is an electrical installation and subject to the same workmanship and safety requirements as traditional electrical work.

Colgan said, “There will be company fleet vehicles and public parking lots that will need EVSE. NECA electrical contractors will be able to meet their EVSE needs, no matter how large or small the job.”

The JATC is now establishing an EVSE training lab at its Lanham, MD facility and will train additional trainers to teach licensed journeymen how to install this equipment. The JATC plans to have the much-needed training underway by June. UL estimates there will be one million electric vehicles on the road in next five years. It is widely believed that electric vehicles have the potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30% in the U.S.

“Our goal is to train as many electricians in this area as possible to meet the growing demand,” said Neidert.
